  • NSC 150
Description:

2-Chloro-4-nitrobenzoic acid is a potent anti-tuberculosis drug that inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of DNA. The trifluoroacetic acid moiety interacts with the hydrogen bond between the 2'- and 4'-carbon atoms, preventing the formation of a 3'-5' phosphodiester bond. This inhibition prevents DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death. 2-Chloro-4-nitrobenzoic acid is metabolized by hydrolysis in vivo, which yields benzoic acid and chloroacetic acid. The benzoic acid moiety has been shown to inhibit HIV infection in vitro. This drug also has antibacterial properties due to its ability to disrupt intermolecular hydrogen bonding between molecules, including those found in bacterial cells.
