5-Chloro-1-pentyne is frequently used in organic synthesis. One of its common uses is in the synthesis of pyrazoles when combined with alpha-diazoesters in a copper-catalyzed reaction, for example, the synthesis of 5-chloro-2-trimethylstannyl-1-pentene when reacting with Me3SnCu.Me2S. It is also used for the preparation of terpenoids via annulation methods, a type of reaction in terpenoid synthesis, either intra- or intermolecular, that involves the formation of a cyclic compound by the reaction of two unsaturated molecules (for example a terminal alkyne).
