6-Cyanopurine is an antiviral agent that is a structural analog of adenine. The compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of murine sarcoma virus and herpes simplex virus, while also inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA. 6-Cyanopurine inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme aldehyde oxidase, which is required for the production of cellular energy in mitochondria. This binding prevents the formation of ATP, which is required for replication and transcription in bacteria. In addition, 6-Cyanopurine may also have antimicrobial activity against tuberculosis and other infections caused by intracellular bacteria. 6-Cyanopurine binds to phosphonates and imidazoles and inhibits their regulatory function on bacterial growth.
