2-Chloro-4-[[2,5-dimethyl-1-[4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl]-1H-imidazol-4-yl]ethynyl]pyridine is a potent antiretroviral drug that inhibits the replication of HIV. It has been shown to be active against both wild type and drug resistant strains of HIV in vitro and in vivo. 2C4E is a prodrug that is converted to its active form by hydrolysis from esterases or glucuronidases present in the body. The active form binds to the gp41 protein on the surface of HIV with high affinity, preventing the virus from attaching to CD4 cells. 2C4E also has inhibitory properties against glutamate receptors, which may play a role in its mechanism of action.
2C4E has been studied as an adjunctive therapy for HIV infection with good tolerability and efficacy and minimal side
