5-Chloro-m-xylene is a chemical compound with the molecular formula CHClS. It is a colorless liquid that boils at 145 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure. 5-Chloro-m-xylene is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds and has been shown to be effective in the synthesis of tetrafluoroboric acid, sodium nitrite, and palladium chloride. This chemical can be synthesized by reacting ethanol with sulfuric acid and then adding sulfuric acid to an ether solution containing chloromethyl methyl ether. The reaction produces tetrafluoroboric acid as a residue, which reacts with nitric acid to produce 5-chloro-m-xylene.
