4-Chloro-2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxaldehyde is a cytotoxic agent that inhibits the production of mitochondrial membrane potential, which is necessary for the generation of ATP. This agent also has the ability to inhibit DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. The compound has been shown to be active against cancer cells, including colon, breast and lung cancers. 4COOHCA has been shown to bind with amines and quinoline derivatives in order to form a covalent bond. These bonds are then broken down by nucleophilic attack to form reactive intermediates that react with DNA or other cellular components, leading to cell death.
