8-Cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX) is an adenosine receptor antagonist that blocks the binding of adenosine to its receptor. DPCPX has been shown to be effective in preventing neuronal death in experimental models and has been shown to have a protective effect against myocardial infarct. This drug also inhibits glutamate release from nerve endings and prevents the activation of P2Y receptors. DPCPX can also inhibit the activity of cyclase enzymes, which are responsible for producing cyclic AMP and cAMP from ATP. DPCPX is a water-soluble ester hydrochloride that can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent.
