3-Chloro-2,4-difluorobenzoic acid is an organic compound with the formula ClCF(CO)OH. It is a white solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohols and ethers. 3-Chloro-2,4-difluorobenzoic acid can be synthesised by reacting chloroform with sodium nitrite in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The reaction sequence involves diazotization of chloroform to form nitrogen dioxide, followed by addition of nitrous acid to produce a mixture of 2-nitrobenzoic acid and 4,5-dinitrobenzoic acid. This mixture is then heated to produce the desired product. 3-Chloro-2,4-difluorobenzoic acid can be used as a yellow dye for clothes or paper. It has a fluorescence quantum yield of 0.0038%.
