5-Chlorobenzimidazole is a hydrochloric acid derivative with an isomeric linker. It has been reported that 5-chlorobenzimidazole can be synthesized from 2-nitroimidazole by reacting with ethoxycarbonyl chloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The nitro groups are then converted to chloro groups by reaction with hydrogen chloride. This is followed by treatment with potassium iodide and sodium nitrite, which leads to the formation of a nitro group in the para position and a chlorine atom in the ortho position on each ring. The final step involves heating 5-chlorobenzimidazole at 300 °C for 2 hours.
5-Chlorobenzimidazole is not adsorbed onto phosphate ions, but reacts with them to yield 2-nitroimidazoles.
