5-(Chloromethyl)-1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole is an alkylating agent that can be used for the preparation of pyridine derivatives. This compound is prepared by cyclizing 5-chloromethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline with a strong base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide in a high yield. The reaction of this compound with a secondary amine gives a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine derivative. 5-(Chloromethyl)-1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole reacts with the nitrogen atom on the secondary amine to produce an N-C bond.
