2-(Carboxycarbonyl)benzoic acid (2-CBA) is a metabolite of benzoic acid that binds to the mitochondrial matrix and inhibits complex I of the electron transport chain. It has been shown to inhibit cancer cells at low concentrations, but is ineffective at higher concentrations. 2-CBA has also been shown to have an effect on plant metabolism, which may be due to its ability to inhibit mitochondria in plants. The effective dose for 2-CBA is between 3 and 10 mM, with an optimal dose of 5 mM. This compound has been found in borohydride reduction and organic acid production in plants. 2-CBA also has an effect on glutamate levels by preventing uptake into mitochondria and by inhibiting enzymes from breaking down glutamate into alpha-ketoglutarate. The thermal expansion coefficient for this compound is 1.5 x 10^5 K^-1, which is significantly larger than those of most other compounds.br
