4-Chloro-5-iodopyrimidine is a heterocyclic compound that is an acetonitrile derivative of diazido. It has potent antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV1, HSV2), and has been shown to inhibit the replication of RNA in vitro. 4-Chloro-5-iodopyrimidine binds to mammalian cells with high affinity, but does not bind to bacterial cells. The molecule also has antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other bacterial species.
