2-[(2-Chloroethyl)thio]propane is a chemical compound with the formula CHClS. It is used as a precursor to other chemicals, and as a solvent in organic synthesis. The compound has been shown to be an effective lasing medium for the excitation of hydrogen chloride molecules in the near infrared region. 2-[(2-Chloroethyl)thio]propane can be used for the preparation of derivatives by reaction with Lewis acids such as boron trifluoride etherate or aluminum chloride. This reaction yields products such as chlorosulfonic acid, ethylchlorosulfonyl fluoride, and methyl chlorosulfonyl fluoride. 2-[(2-Chloroethyl)thio]propane also has an asymmetric carbon atom, which can be resolved using microwave spectroscopy or laser spectroscopy with a constant wavelength on its rotational motion.
