2-Chloropropanamide is a reactive molecule that reacts with water to form a hydroxyl compound. It is an amide of chloroacetic acid and propaneamine. 2-Chloropropanamide is used as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. 2-Chloropropanamide also reacts with the amines in hair, forming an aziridine intermediate. This reaction may be involved in the development of cancer cells. In population growth, 2-chloropropanamide causes a decrease in population size by reacting with chlorine atoms to form hydrogen chloride gas (HCl). This reaction may be responsible for the observed increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics such as penicillin and erythromycin due to the production of β-amino acids that can compete with arginine for binding sites on ribosomes.
