3-Oxime is a potent neuroprotective agent. It prevents the oxidative damage of brain tissue by inhibiting catalase and cholinesterases, which are enzymes that break down hydrogen peroxide and acetylcholine, respectively. 3-Oxime has been shown to be effective in subchronic animal models of neurodegeneration and depression. 3-Oxime also has a strong antidepressant-like effect in mice, which may be due to its ability to increase levels of glutathione in the brain. The biochemical basis for this effect is not yet known but may involve increased levels of monoamine neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine.
