5-Chloroquinazoline-2,4-diamine is an undescribed compound that has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the replication of the Toxoplasma gondii protozoan parasite. It binds to the acidic cysteine residues in the parasite's DNA and inhibits its replication by binding to the pyrimidine moiety of nucleotide precursors, preventing deoxyribonucleotide synthesis. This compound is orally active and is metabolized into 5-chloroquinazoline-2,4-diamine hydrochloride, which is then excreted in urine. 5-Chloroquinazoline-2,4-diamine has also been shown to inhibit viral replication through its ability to bind nitrite and form diazonium salt with hydrochloric acid.
