The 6-chloro-1,3-benzodioxole-5-carbaldehyde (CBD) is an impurity that is found in the synthesis of tetroxide. It is a product of the oxidation of benzyl alcohol with chlorine and sodium hydroxide. The synthesis of CBD can be used as a marker for the presence of tetroxide in organic solvents. The chemical profile of CBD is similar to that of piperonal and 3-benzyloxyaniline, which are also products in the synthesis of tetroxide. This impurity has been shown to have leukemia cell killing properties when tested on L1210 cells. The synthetic pathway for CBD is not well understood, but it may be due to spontaneous reactions or byproducts from other synthetic reactions such as those that occur during the production of piperonal.
