1-Chloro-4-(sulfinylamino)benzene is a compound that has been shown to be thermally activated in the gas phase. This activation is attributed to the formation of a tetroxide intermediate, which can be detected by kinetic and thermodynamic analysis. The chlorides in this compound increase the polarizability of the molecule, increasing its rate of reaction with nitrate. Addition of formic acid to this molecule has been shown to shift its absorption spectrum from 597 nm to 612 nm. Formic acid also increases the rate at which 1-chloro-4-(sulfinylamino)benzene reacts with nitrate, as it is more soluble than chloride. The kinetics and mechanism of this reaction are not yet fully understood.
