Description:
3-Chloro-5-methylphenol is a herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by preventing them from making their own chlorophyll. 3-Chloro-5-methylphenol is used as an extract and is dehalogenated to 3,4,5-trichlorophenol. It can also be converted to 5,6-dichloro-2,3,4,5,-tetrachlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4D). 3-Chloro-5-methylphenol has been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas cultures. The biochemical pathway for this chemical involves oxidation of carbon sources by oxygen and metabolic pathways in which it produces intermediates such as oxalate. This can be seen in the scheme below:

CH3COOH + CO → CH3COOCOOH
