1-(5-Chloro-2-nitrophenyl)ethanone (1) is a detectable and olefination sensitive precursor that is transformed to 2,4,6-trichlorophenylacetic acid (2) in a three-step transformation process. The transformation process starts with the conversion of 1 to phosphine oxide (3), followed by treatment with triethyl phosphite to give 3,5-dichloro-2-nitrobenzaldehyde (4). The final step involves reaction of 4 with an amine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst to give 2.
