Description:

2-(2-Cyanophenyl)acetic acid is a cephalosporin antibiotic that acts as a bacteriostatic agent. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. 2-(2-Cyanophenyl)acetic acid binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The structural isomers of this drug are biotransformed into cephalothin.
