Beta-costus acid is a compound in the plant genus Costus that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity. Beta-costus acid has also been found to have anticoagulant activity, and may be effective against metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus. Beta-costus acid is found in the roots of Costus species, and can be extracted from the root powder using boiling water. The extract contains dehydrocostus lactone, which is an active component of beta-costus acid. Beta-costus acid also contains significant levels of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and fatty acids.
