5-Chloro-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-2-carboxylic acid is a metabolite of the antibiotic oxytetracycline. It is produced by bacteria in the environment and can be found in water, soil, and plants. 5-Chloro-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridine-2-carboxylic acid is a degrader of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences and inhibits bacterial growth. This metabolic product has been shown to biodegrade in aerobic conditions with exposure to sunlight or oxygen. It also has been shown to be more stable than oxytetracycline against microbial degradation.
