4-Chloro-2-(methylthio)-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of other organic compounds. It is synthesized from 4-chloro-2,6-dimethylaniline and methyl iodide by a sequence of reactions with esterification, transfer reaction, and reductive amination. The intermediate 4-chloro-2-(methylthio)aniline is obtained by reacting 4-chloro-2,6-dimethylaniline with methyl thiolacetate in the presence of sodium hydroxide. This intermediate reacts with phosphorus pentachloride to produce 4-chloro-2-(methylthio)-7H pyrrolo[2,3 d]pyrimidine.
