Description

Chlorin e6 is a photosensitizer that has been used to treat tumors. It is a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon with a perchlorate ion at its centre. Chlorin e6 has been shown to have an antimicrobial effect on bacteria and fungi, but not on viruses. The perchlorate ion reacts with oxygen in the body to form singlet oxygen, which damages DNA, lipids, proteins and other cellular components. Chlorin e6 also has the ability to kill cancer cells by damaging their mitochondria and inducing oxidative injury in cancer tissues. This drug has been shown to be effective in treating squamous cell carcinoma and hl-60 cells in mice by photodynamic therapy, when it was injected intraperitoneally or intravenously.
