4-Chlorophenyl chlorothioformate is a reactive agent that can be used as a precursor in the preparation of thiocarbamates. It is prepared by the reaction of carbon disulphide with 4-chloroaniline and sulfuric acid. The reaction proceeds in two steps, with the first step being preparative, followed by a stepwise reduction to yield 4-chlorophenyl chlorothioformate. This stepwise process yields high yields (up to 99%) of 4-chlorophenyl chlorothioformate, which has been shown to react quantitatively with amines and sulfates under kinetic conditions.
