7-Chloro-1-indanone is a diacid that is used in the synthesis of tetracyclic compounds. It has been shown to inhibit topoisomerase, an enzyme that maintains the integrity of DNA, and can therefore be used as a cytotoxic agent. 7-Chloro-1-indanone also inhibits lung carcinoma cells in culture. This compound can be converted into its methylene derivative by decarboxylation. The methylene form is an analog of pentacyclic compounds and can act as a topoisomerase inhibitor. 7-Chloro-1-indanone has been shown to inhibit the amidation reaction catalyzed by amidases. The amidated form of this compound is called 7-(N,N'-dimethylamidino) 1H-indenone (DAMA). DAMA has been shown to inhibit DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes
