Chloroethene is a colorless, volatile liquid that has been shown to cause angiosarcoma in rats. This chemical is a polymerization product of vinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride. Chloroethene can be found in water vapor, which may be the primary source of exposure for humans. There is evidence that chloroethene may act as a reactive oxygen species and inhibit mitochondrial functions. The chemical has been shown to be toxic to cells in culture and causes oxidative damage to DNA. Chloroethene has also been shown to have no effect on infectious diseases such as HIV or hepatitis B virus but does have an effect on some bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. Chloroethene can be detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which is an analytical method used for the identification of organic compounds.
