Beta-curcumene is a polycyclic hydrocarbon that can be found in the essential oils of plants such as Curcuma aromatica. It has been shown to inhibit growth and induce apoptosis in cancer cells, specifically prostate cancer cells. Beta-curcumene inhibits urea nitrogen levels by up to 10% and stimulates fatty acid synthesis, leading to decreased levels of cholesterol. Beta-curcumene also has anti-inflammatory properties and may be an effective treatment for skin conditions such as psoriasis. The chemical composition of beta-curcumene is unknown, but it has been hypothesized that the molecule may have a ring structure with a double bond at the fourth position from the end. The synthase gene that codes for beta-curcumene is present in most plants, but is ectopically expressed in Curcuma aromatica.
