Cerium sulfate is a white crystalline powder that is insoluble in water. It can be prepared by the reaction of potassium dichromate and cerous (IV) oxide, which are both soluble in water. The product is filtered and then dried to remove the water. Cerium sulfate has been used as a pharmaceutical preparation in a variety of products, including eye drops, ear drops, mouthwashes, and ointments. It has also been used as an efficient method for isolating other metals from their salts. Cerium sulfate reacts with hydrochloric acid to form cerous chloride, which is then oxidized to cerium (IV) oxide by oxygen gas. This reaction releases heat and light.
