Cevimeline is a cholinergic agent that is used to treat salivary gland dysfunction in geriatric patients and autoimmune diseases. It has been shown to have a significant effect on the secretion of saliva, which may be due to its ability to stimulate the muscarinic receptor. Cevimeline hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against radiation-induced xerostomia and may also be used as an adjunct therapy for chronic oral mucositis induced by cancer chemotherapy. It has been found that cevimeline induces transcriptional regulation of a number of genes, including those involved in skin cancer and chronic oral inflammation.
