Bupropion is a drug that has been used to treat depression and other psychiatric disorders. Bupropion, which is marketed under the trade name Wellbutrin®, is an antidepressant of the aminoketone class. It is commonly used in combination with other medications for depression and anxiety, such as SSRIs or MAOIs. The mechanism of action of bupropion includes blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine by presynaptic neurons, thereby increasing their extracellular concentrations. Bupropion also blocks the reuptake of serotonin by some postsynaptic neurons. This inhibition leads to increased activity at postsynaptic receptors, including 5-HT2A receptors. In vitro studies have shown that bupropion inhibits the hydrolysis of dextromethorphan, a substrate molecule for CYP2D6 enzymes. The chemical inhibitors are known to inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes as well as various oxidative reactions involving cyto
