Description

4-(2-Chlorophenyl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazole (4CP) is a selective inhibitor of the enzyme catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT). It is used in the treatment of hypertension and Parkinson's disease. The mechanism of action for 4CP is unknown, but it is thought to block the activity of COMT by competitive inhibition. 4CP has been shown to be effective in reducing blood pressure in animal models and in humans. In addition, it inhibits dopamine degradation, which may be one mechanism by which it reduces blood pressure. 4COM has been shown to have antidepressant properties, with efficacy similar to that of drugs such as amitriptyline or moclobemide. 4CP also inhibits the replication of viruses such as HIV and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1).
