6-Chloro-2-naphthylsulfonylchloride is a chlorinating agent that has high yield and is inorganic. It can be used to produce medicines such as 6-chloro-2-naphthol, which has potent antihistamine activity. 6-Chloro-2-naphthylsulfonylchloride is also a fluorine analogue of the inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, which blocks the conversion of xanthine to uric acid and lowers blood levels of uric acid. This product binds to the active site on the enzyme xanthine oxidase, preventing it from performing its function; this prevents an increase in uric acid levels in the blood. The pharmacophore for this inhibitor was determined using X-ray crystallography.
