CIS-3-chloroacrylic acid is a metabolite of the drug chloroquine. It is an organic compound that is soluble in water and has a molecular weight of 126.2 g/mol. The chemical formula for CIS-3-chloroacrylic acid is C10H12ClO3. This compound has shown to be useful as a model system for studying the reaction mechanism and kinetics of dehalogenase enzymes, which are important for metabolism in humans and other animals. The carboxylate group on CIS-3-chloroacrylic acid reacts with malonic acid, forming cis,cis-1,2-dichloroethylmalonic acid and releasing CO2 gas. CIS-3-chloroacrylic acid can also be used to study kidney function by measuring the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in rats by sampling blood from the renal artery.
