3-Cyano-4-oxo-piperidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (3COP) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. 3COP binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 3COP has been shown to be active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It also has antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria such as E. coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Citrobacter, Proteus, Salmonella, Serratia, Shigella and Haemophilus
