4-Cyanothiazole is a potent inhibitor of the serine protease, which is an enzyme that cleaves peptide bonds. It has been shown to inhibit cell growth and can be used as a fungicide in agriculture. 4-Cyanothiazole inhibits the biological activity of vitamin B12 by binding to its allosteric site on the enzyme methionine synthase. This drug also has potent antagonistic effects against metabotropic glutamate receptors, which are ion channels that are activated by glutamate. Other assays have shown that 4-cyanothiazole binds to molybdenum, preventing it from oxidizing phosphorous pentoxide to phosphoric acid. The largazole is an insecticide used for the control of stored product pests such as grain beetles and rice weevils.
