2-Chlorophenethylbromide is a chemical that belongs to the group of halogenated hydrocarbons. It has been shown to be metabolically activated in human liver and lung cells and may contribute to the development of cancer. 2-Chlorophenethylbromide can also induce alterations in DNA, such as adduct formation with purines, which has been observed in smokers with lung cancer. It is also a potential carcinogen that may cause reproductive toxicity and neurotoxicity. 2-Chlorophenethylbromide binds to cytochrome P450 2A13 (CYP2A13) which leads to increased metabolic activation and increased DNA adducts. This binding has been shown to lead to an increase in tumor incidence in rats, suggesting that this chemical may be a carcinogen.
