2-Chloro-N-phenylaniline is a compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of S. aureus, Acinetobacter sp., and subtilis. It is also known to be an inhibitor of translation and has potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. 2-Chloro-N-phenylaniline is a ligand that binds to the active site of bacterial ribosomes and inhibits protein synthesis by preventing the formation of an aminoacyl-tRNA complex with its corresponding codon on mRNA. This inhibition prevents the incorporation of amino acids into proteins, which are vital for cell division. 2-Chloro-N-phenylaniline also reacts with carbazoles in order to form acetonitrile as an intermediate product. The reactivity with carbazoles causes 2CHPE's strong inhibitory effect on bacterial growth and its ability to bind to amines.
