Description:
1-(Chloromethyl)-2,3-dimethylbenzene is used to synthesize phenanthrene from magnesium and phenanthrenes. Activated magnesium reacts with the chloromethyl group of 1-(chloromethyl)-2,3-dimethylbenzene to produce 2-methylphenanthrene. The cyclization reaction yields 1-(chloromethyl)-1,2,3-trimethylbenzene which is then reacted with a second molecule of activated magnesium to form 1-(chloromethyl)-2,3-dimethylbenzene.
