Cefepime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It acts by inactivating the bacterial cell wall by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, which are enzymes essential for the formation of peptidoglycan chains. Cefepime has been shown to be effective against infections caused by bacteria that have developed resistance to other antibiotics, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The drug also has a low toxicity for neutropenic patients due to its ability to cause cell lysis and release of intracellular contents.
