3-Chloro-1,2-benzothiazole 1,1-dioxide is a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth. It binds to the proton and chloride ion in the cell membrane and inhibits the transfer of protons across the membrane. This prevents ATP synthesis, which then leads to cell death. 3-Chloro-1,2-benzothiazole 1,1-dioxide has been shown to have bactericidal effects on an array of organisms including Gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The bactericidal concentrations for 3-chloro-1,2-benzothiazole 1,1-dioxide range from 0.025 μM to 2 mM depending on the organism it is being used against.
