- (1R)-(+)-Camphanic Acid
- (1R,4S)-4,7,7-trimethyl-3-oxo-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-1-carboxylic acid
- Camphanic acid, (1R)-(+)-
(1R)-(-)-Camphanic acid is an ether that is soluble in thionyl chloride, toluene, and dioxane. It can be prepared by the reaction of camphene with sulfuric acid or potassium dichromate. (1R)-(-)-Camphanic acid crystallizes from a solution of dioxane and water. The enantiomer (1S) is unstable and decomposes rapidly on exposure to light or air. Preparative methods for this compound include the use of a number of reagents, such as thionyl chloride, phosphorus pentachloride, or hydrogen chloride. This compound is stable at room temperature but should be stored in a refrigerator when not in use. The compound has been used in organic synthesis reactions such as Friedel-Crafts reactions and other reactions involving chlorides, bromides, or iodides.
