2-Cyano-3-methylbut-2-enoic acid (CMBA) is a compound that is used as an efficient and inexpensive catalyst for the synthesis of propylene oxide from n-hexane. The mechanism of the reaction is not yet fully understood but it is thought to be due to a copper(I) chloride complex that reacts with CMBA in the presence of acetone and alkyl esters. In addition, CMBA can be used as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of other organic compounds such as cyanoacetic acid, which has antibiotic and fungicidal properties.
