5-(Chloromethyl)pyrimidine is a metabolite of chlormethiazole (CMZ), which is a drug that is used to treat insomnia, anxiety, and nausea. 5-(Chloromethyl)pyrimidine can be detected in urine and blood samples and it has been shown that CMZ can be metabolized by the liver into 5-(chloromethyl)pyrimidine. Metabolism studies have revealed that this metabolite is excreted through the kidney as well as via bile. It was also found that CMZ can be metabolized by CYP2E1, CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2D6, and CYP1A2 enzymes.
