4-Chloro-3-nitro-7-azaindole is an efficient, regiocontrolled, and regioisomeric substance that can be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown to be an efficient brominating agent for chloro-, bromo-, and iodo-substituted 7-azaindoles. 4-Chloro-3-nitro-7-azaindole is a crystalline solid that can be purified by recrystallization from acetone. The impurities in this compound are readily removed by air oxidation and hydrolysis.
