4-Chloro-2-methylthiopyrimidine is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be an inhibitor of cancer cell lines. It has been shown to have inhibitory activity against human colon carcinoma cells, in vitro and in vivo. This drug binds to the nucleophilic sites on DNA and inhibits the synthesis of RNA and proteins, leading to cell death. 4-Chloro-2-methylthiopyrimidine has been shown to inhibit cancer growth by targeting the chloride channel of colon carcinoma cells and causing a decrease in cellular chloride levels. The drug also causes apoptosis through activation of protein kinase C, which leads to nuclear translocation of Bax and subsequent release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol. 4-Chloro-2-methylthiopyrimidine is not active against normal cells because it does not bind well due to their high levels of intracellular chloride ions.
