Chromium(III) sulfate is an inorganic salt that is soluble in water and can be used as a reducing agent. It has been used extensively for the treatment of wastewater containing hexavalent chromium. The reduction process involves an electron transfer from chromium (III) to sulfate, which results in the production of elemental sulfur and calcium sulfide. Chromium(III) sulfate hydrate has been shown to form gels when mixed with water and has been successfully used temporarily as a soil remediation technique. This compound is thermodynamically stable at pH values between 5-8, but will hydrolyze at pH values greater than 8. Chromium(III) sulfate hydrate also adsorbs anions more strongly than cations, such as Cl-, Br-, NO3-, SO4-.
