Calcium D-saccharate is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that belongs to the class of calcium and sodium salts. It has been shown to decrease swelling, stiffness, and pain in CD-1 mice with various autoimmune diseases. Calcium D-saccharate inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by blocking the enzyme cyclooxygenase. The inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis is due to the hydroxyl group, which reacts with the catalytic site of the cyclooxygenase enzyme. This reaction prevents the formation of prostaglandin H2 from arachidonic acid. Calcium D-saccharate also has an inhibitory effect on skin cancer cells in mammals, which may be due to its ability to induce DNA strand breaks, leading to apoptosis.
