Cupric chloride dihydrate is a water-soluble salt that is used in the preparation of granulosa cells for histological examination. The reaction solution contains a detergent composition, which disrupts the cell membrane and releases cellular contents. The reaction mechanism involves the binding of copper ions to cyclin D2, which prevents it from forming complexes with other proteins. This leads to mitochondrial membrane depolarization and antimicrobial activity against bacteria. Cupric chloride dihydrate has also been shown to bind to iron-binding sites on cytosolic proteins, leading to their degradation.
